Repairing a hole

Rust spots and holes in your car’s bodywork reduce its sale value. Repair the damage yourself in a few easy steps.

You will need these products

Here’s how

First, remove the old paintwork and then any rust from the damaged area. Sand down the rust with sandpaper and clean the undercoat with MoTip Degreaser.

The hole then needs to be bridged. Take the Fibreglass Tissue and cut it slightly larger than the measurements. You need to apply presto Resin to the edges of the hole that needs filling before you can apply the fibre. Take the appropriate amount of filler from the tin and mix it thoroughly with around 2-4 % hardener. Apply the resin to the edges with a brush. Finally, attach the Fibreglass Tissue to the hole and cover it with resin. Leave to dry for about 40 minutes and then mechanically sand down with 600-grit sandpaper. To keep the undercoat clean, dry and free of grease for further work, clean it with MoTip Degreaser.

You can fill in the uneven areas between the Fibreglass Tissue and the untreated areas with presto Fine Filler. Mix the filler with hardener, following the product instructions, and apply to the area you have prepared. Let it dry for about 30 minutes and then sand down with 600-grit wet sandpaper. Clean off the sanding dust with MoTip Degreaser.

Cover the surrounding area with masking tape. Treat the area first with MoTip Primer to ensure the subsequent lacquer holds perfectly. Apply the primer in several thin layers. Let it dry for about 2 hours and then sand down with presto 1000-grit wet sandpaper. Clean the undercoat with MoTip Degreaser.

Now the lacquer with the corresponding colour from the MoTip Kompakt system can be applied in several thin layers. In order to make sure it blends in to the original paintwork, mist it within the covered area. Once the metal-effect lacquer has dried for 30 minutes, it must be sealed with 2-Coat Clear Lacquer. Otherwise the aluminium particles in the metallic lacquer will be damaged by environmental and weather conditions.

Remove the masking tape once the clear lacquer has hardened for about 2 hours. Wipe the undercoat with a clean, dry cloth. Last, but not least, we recommend using MoTip Spot Blender to ensure a smooth blend effect from the old to the new paintwork.
